View all of Vincent Van Gogh’s revealing letters online in the Vincent Van Gogh: The Letters exhibit
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam commissioned an ambitious project called Vincent Van Gogh: The Letters, an extensive annotated archive of the Dutch Impressionist artist’s correspondence that’s searchable by chronology, place, and correspondent. Interactive tabs on the viewing screen allow scrolling between the original text, facsimile images of the letters, as well as the English translations.
Many of the more than 900 letters – most of which have never been on display previously – are between himself and his younger brother Theo, who was an art dealer that supported him financially in his later life.
The video report below features museum researcher Hans Luijten among other, discussing Van Gogh’s letters, their style, and the impact they may have on society’s view of the artist and his work.
You can view the entire collection, along with attached sketches at www.vangoghletters.org/vg.
